Honouring the bomber boys of Downham Market

Between 1944 and 1945, brave aircrews flew perilous missions from RAF Downham Market into occupied Europe. This website serves as a permanent digital record of their bravery, preserving the memory of the Pathfinder Force squadrons, the 3 Group Main Force, and historic units like 218 Gold Coast and 623 Squadron for generations.

The Airfield Cairn Memorial and its legacy

 The Airfield Cairn memorial is a beautiful memorial created by author and Pathfinder Historian Christopher Coverdale, featuring the names of each aircrew member listed as missing in action engraved on 8 stainless steel plaques, and a central cairn plaque that honours all who served at RAF Downham Market. The memorial honours all who served at the former RAF Downham Market from 1942 to 1945. This memorial was inspired by the generous material sponsorship and donations from the Friends of the Airfield Cairn Memorials. This support helped Chris fulfil a lifetime dream of remembering all those who made the memorial possible. With respect and gratitude. The Cairn memorial is located at the start of the main runway. Through this site, we document its significance, share past and present imagery, and connect researchers and relatives with historical records, maintaining a vivid link between then and now.
