Monthly Summary Of Events for July 1942

There was much to do from the off at RAF Downham Market; many of the dormitory and communal areas were not completed in time for 218 Gold Coast Squadron, and the so-called settling-in period would be somewhat delayed, becoming a more extended adjustment period for 218 Gold Coast Squadron aircrew and general Staff. Moreover, many back-room staff found the accommodation not as lovely as the brick & mortar-built dorms and mess halls they used at RAF Marham.

It was a simple case of going back to basics. Being presented with a tin Nissen hut was a quick throwback, and many higher ranks soon voiced their dissatisfaction with the powers that be.

Bexwell Hall was acquired for the station commander, squadron commander, and senior backroom staff. Bexwell Rectory became accommodation and the Mess Hall for officers above Flight Sergeant. Aircrews billeted in the adjacent Nissen huts on the rear grounds of Bexwell Rectory. Airmen of Flying Officer and above got accommodation at the Rectory on a first-come basis; if an officer living at the rectory were listed as missing in action on an operation, his bed would be allocated to the next-ranking officer in line.

From the Rectory down a country road through a tree line of Sycamore & Beech trees stood tall, nestled among them was the sergeant's mess buildings, a double into link long brick building (Still there today), the other side of the country road again nestled in the trees was the WAAF Mess hall, Shower rooms and WAAF Officer. The planned WAAF dormitory site was not completed until the end of September 1942, and it consisted of a group of Nissen huts hugging the tree line at the back of the Bexwell Hall grounds.

The Ground crews, Fitters, Armourers, and Technicians all found themselves living in Nissen Huts, which are located within the boundaries of the technical site or over the outskirts of Oakwood's dispersal site. It would take the contractor, W. C. French Limited, another 20 weeks before the airfield site took better shape. As Crazy as it might seem, base personnel arriving at the station throughout July would live temporarily in hotels on Station Road, Downham Market, until the main dormitory and communal sites were built.

By the Spring of 1943, extra aircraft maintenance hangars were constructed. At this time, the airfield was starting to resemble the revised edition of Map No.2. The most significant development of the airfield was in mid-1943. With the Installation of F.I.D.O. in November 1943, RAF Downham Market suddenly became recognised by other Bomber Command Groups, as it was the Secondary Bomber Command airfield to have F.I.D.O. installed and, by the end of the War, one of 15 airfields to have it.

Air Vice Marshal Donald Bennett, 8 Group Path Finder Force C-In-C, who knew only too well how F.I.D.O. would save lives, and was quoted as saying," I think the Public should know that FIDO in this war has served over ten thousand Lives and without it so many vital aircrew and their aircraft would of so come to curtain crash landing owing to heavy fog, unable to land."

12/07/42 Operations: Heligoland 'Gardening' Rosemary

Two aircrews are detailed and briefed for the operations from RAF Downham Market tonight. The Effort was Gardening, and both crews planted their vegetables (mines) in the allotted positions. 18,000 lbs. of seed (mines) were planted during this operation. 'M' Mother BF309 Pilot Officer Farquharson took off first at 2255 hours, closely followed by Stirling 'R' Robert W7562 Sergeant Hartley getting up at 2300 hours. Both crews confirmed that their duty had been carried out; Stirling's landed back at base at 2200 hours.

13/14/07/42 Operations: Duisburg, Germany and Lille, France

Three aircrews were detailed and briefed for operations from Downham Market tonight: Sergeant Johnson, Sergeant Falconer, and Flight Commander Squadron Leader Powell.

The target was Duisburg, Germany, for Sgt. Johnson and Sgt. Falconer, and Lille, France for S/L. Powell. The latter was a nickel operation.

(In the RAF, "Nickle" was the codename for operations where aircraft dropped leaflets, rather than bombs, over enemy territory. These operations were often used to spread propaganda and encourage the civil population to abandon the war effort.)

Stirling, "E" Easy R9375, took off from Downham Market at 2310 hours for this operation. Sergeant Johnson, 218 Squadron, was the pilot who successfully carried out his duty. It's not clear why, on his return, he landed at RAF Marham at 0400 hours instead of returning to Downham.

Sergeant Falconer took off for the Duisburg operation from Downham Market at 0025 hours of the 14th in Stirling "F" Freddie BF213. He took Second Pilot Officer Mc Daniels to carry out his "Second Dickey" (In RAF slang, "Second Dickey" refers to a pilot, often a new or trainee pilot, who flies with an experienced crew on an operation to gain experience before taking command of their crew. It's a way to familiarise themselves with operational procedures and tactics before leading their own missions.

They carried out the duty, returning at 0400 hours. In his debriefing, it was remarked that "Flares illuminated the target. Visibility was good. Three or four bursts from his bombs were seen, and the fires started."
